The rule of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.  Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

we can see that woman is on the left lower corner. Her head is inside the power point square. The right side is empty

This is an example of Rule of thirds because it used the grid to divide the image up into equal parts. It also is an example of rule of thirds because the focal point ( the beautiful tree) lies on the intersection and points were the horizontal and vertical lines intersect. This creates a beautiful design and guides your eye directly to the focal point.

This picture is a great example of the rule of thirds because it has a grid that shows how the image can be divided into equal squares. It also is a good example because it shows the star fish on the axis point in the lower left hand corner. This picture would make a good postcard because the focal point is in the corner and leaves plenty of room for type.

This picture is an example of rule of thirds because it is divided into nine equal parts. The meerkat's face is at one of the focal points where the x and y axis meet. It feels more alive because the main point of the image is positioned to the left, not in the middle. If it were in the middle it would loose the effect of the rule of thirds.

This pretty bird follows the rule of thirds because its body is placed on the right side of the image. It's a little more towards the center than to the right, but it still fits on that right-side line that moves vertically down. So it still fits, and is a nice composition.

This picture is a great example of the rule of thirds because the yellow lemon cut buoys gently in the focal point of the teacup, drawing the eye due to its shading, as well as in light of the fact that it sits at the base right cross area of the guide.

This photo shows the rules of thirds by having the flower placed in the lower right hand corner. This adds more interest to the subject because if the flower was centered it would be boring. The splits in the wood also guides the eye to the flower and the lines can also represent the lines used in the rule of thirds.
